As a true gem in the Balkans, Bulgaria is an eclectic mix of old meets new, vibrant churches meet grey communist-era buildings. On my recent jaunt through Turkey and the Balkans, I made my way by land from Istanbul to Plovdiv, an artsy town in Southern Bulgaria, then Sofia, its vibrant capital. I uncovered a country sculpted by its characteristic edifices, monuments and Orthodox churches.
Wedged at a discreet corner of Eastern Europe, Bulgaria borders between the forward-thinking West and traditional Asia. While futuristic edifices and ancient churches stand side by side, my love for Bulgaria stems from its roots. I’ll let my photos bring you through the architectural marvels of Bulgaria for a closer look.
Rila Monastery, Rila
This ancient Orthodox church secretly tucked in an isolated location 2 hours outside of Sofia is a patchwork of colorful wall paintings and century-old inscriptions. Visiting the monastery itself is worth the daytrip, inspiring visitors with its architectural splendor.

Sofia, Bulgaria’s Capital
Sofia’s most prominent and attractive landmark is the Alexander Nevski Cathedral. Its turquoise green domes and shimmering golden mosaic tiles have given it quite a reputation.
The central fountain in downtown Sofia is reminiscent of those in Western Europe, creating a rather romantic appeal to its garden.
Sofia’s Grand Theatre is still used today as a cultural spot. In summer, urbanites gather in the park surrounding the theatre.
Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s Artsy Town
The Roman Amphitheater ruins in downtown Plovdiv is poised on a hilltop. Its well-preserved facade is extremely impressive, considering that it is one of the oldest monuments in Bulgaria.
The artsy town of Plovdiv has an artistic flair, evident throughout its cobbled streets.
